Regional Intervention Program has been serving families with young children in Nashville since 1969. RIP is an internationally recognized parent-to-parent program in which parents learn to work directly with their own children. Experienced RIP parents provide training and support to newly enrolled families. The program is coordinated by a professional resource staff and is available to families in which there are concerns regarding a young child's behavior. RIP is designed to work with a wide variety of behaviors. RIP was brought to Cleveland, Tennessee in the summer of 2001 largely through the efforts of a mother who graduated from RIP over 10 years ago.

RIP of Cleveland is housed in property owned by First Presbyterian Church.

WHO COMES TO RIP?

The Regional Intervention Program (RIP) serves families with young children who have behavior concerns. Children are eligible for RIP from two years old through the kindergarten year.

WHY COME TO RIP?

Parents with concerns about their child's behavior have come to RIP with assistance in handling things such as:

Peer Conflict
Overly Active Behavior
Tantrums
Aggressive Behavior
Not Following Instructions
Bedtime and Sleeping Problems
Destructive Behavior
Inattentiveness

"I felt totally helpless. I felt bewildered and felt like a failure as a parent. I blamed myself for his problems. Our entire family was in a state of emotional turmoil."

"I had a feeling deep inside that something was not right with my child."

"I've heard everything. 'It's just a phase, he'll grow out of it.' 'You need to spend more time with him.' 'He just needs a good spanking.' None of it helped."

HOW DOES RIP WORK?

RIP's most important component is parent implementation. This means that parents learn to work with their own children, support one another, and operate the program with the support of RIP staff.

WHAT SERVICES DOES RIP OFFER?

Beginning behavior management training in areas such as identifying problem behaviors, child development, positive discipline strategies, and family conflict resolution.

Advanced Behavior management training in all these areas.

Classroom programs teach children behaviors that will help them be successful in school.

Social skills training helps children learn sharing and problem solving in social interactions with peers.

Follow up services for families who complete the program include: help in finding school programs, and consultation about problems at home and school.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST

Your time and effort. At least one parent will attend 2 two-hour sessions per week with his or her child at the RIP center until the family's goals have been met and "payback" has been completed.

WHAT IS "PAYBACK"?

The program is divided into 2 phases of treatment. The first is called "active treatment"; the second is called "payback". Both phases are vitally important to the families and the program. During payback, parents solidify their skills by assisting in the operation of the program and the support of newer parents.

"Now I like my son. I've always loved him, but I didn't like him before."

"The support at RIP reassured me that I was a capable parent, which I had begun to doubt. It was a nice feeling to know that I wasn't alone... other people have the same problems."

"RIP has taught me ways of dealing with behavior that are direct, positive, and have integrity for all involved."

"Things aren't perfect, but they are so manageable."
